An extra second in 2008: The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) has reported that a positive leap second will be introduced in UTC at the end of 31 December 2008. From 1 January 2009 at 0 h UTC, and until further notice, the difference between UTC and TAI will be UTC – TAI = –34 s.
