The kilogram is the unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI). It is defined through an artefact known as the international prototype, which is kept at the BIPM. The principle role of the Mass Section is to promote world-wide compatibility in mass measurements by providing calibrations traceable to the international prototype. Research and development are carried out in several areas in order to improve our services and understanding of the fundamental problems of mass determinations at the kilogram level.
