Using experience gained during a study of systematic biases and uncertainties in the NIST SRP, the BIPM developed a UV laser based photometer capable of measuring ozone concentrations based on its absorption of light at three different wavelengths in the Hartley band: 244.06 nm, 248.32 nm and 257.34 nm. The use of a (frequency doubled argon-ion) laser as the light source instead of the traditional mercury lamp allows a reduction of the uncertainty associated with the path length of the light in the instrument gas cells, which is the second major uncertainty component of Standard Reference Photometers after the ozone absorption cross-section.
