Hugh Preston-Thomas, Honorary Member of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM), died on 11 August 2012 at the age of 88.

Hugh Preston-Thomas was a member of the CIPM for 22 years, from 1969 until his retirement in 1991. He was Vice-President of the CIPM from 1984 to 1991, and he was elected an Honorary Member on his retirement.

He was President of the Consultative Committee for Thermometry (CCT) from 1971 until 1989. This was a key period for the thermometry community, culminating with the adoption of the International Termperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90).

Hugh Preston-Thomas was also Editor of the journal Metrologia, from 1968 until 1981. Thereafter he continued as Member and then Honorary Member of Metrologia's Editorial Board.
